Week of 8/31
"Mrs. McGary, I love school."
"I don't know how to tie my shoes."
"When do we go out for recess?"
"When do we go home?"
"Mrs. McGary, you need to change the schedule."
"I got a new kitty"
"Do you know my auntie?"
"I live by the big tree."
"What is a clothespin?"
"Does my name start with a J?"
"My mom made me a fluff sandwich."
"Are the buses here yet?"
Week of 9/7
We started our reading groups. Each group is an insect. We also started our Classroom Readers. Every time we have reading groups, that book goes in to their reader box.
Each student is assigned a certain day to be a classroom reader. Classroom readers pick a book from their reader box and read it in front of the class. The audience works on appropriate audience behavior.
Week of 9/14
I was very happy to see many of you at our Open House. The children were very excited to show you some of their work and their room. Thank you for coming.
Week of 10/19
We had very special visitors come to South Hiram Elementary this week. Fireman Pete came our classroom to teach us about fire safety. He showed us his uniform, and how he puts it on very quickly. Pete reminded us not to be afraid of a fireman, even if he has his oxygen mask on. We all practiced crawling as if there was smoke in the room. He showed us how to use the back of hands to feel the door. We went outside to see all the equipment on the firetruck. Thank you fireman Pete.
Week of 11/2
Ms. A has come. She brought with her 4 target words. We now have ten target words. This Friday we will have our test on all ten words,
a, am, and, at, me, mom, my, to, the, no. Reading groups are going well. We always begin our group with a picture walk. Then I ask them to make predictions. While they are reading I am watching to see if they are using their reading strategies.
1. Do they know where to start reading.
2. Do they point to the words when they read.
3. Are they reading from left to right.
Week of 11/9
One way to make your child feel special is.......
As soon as your child knows how to write his/her name, make a trip to the library and register your child for a library card. Then, together, use it frquently. Children are very excited to have something with their own name on it.
On 11/16 and 11/17, I attended the Literacy For All Conference in Rhode Island. I came home with some exciting ideas. When students return to school, they will be introduced to some new Literacy Centers.
Week of 11/16

Month of February
We celebrated 100's Day by sorting our collections into groups of ten. Some of our collections included macaroni, buttons, pennies, popsicle sticks, candy and more.
Our Valentine celebration was a blast. Students were asked to do their own writing on the cards.
