Engineering and Technology Design
Course Syllabus (subject to change depending on yearly projects)

Assignments: Homework sheets and assignments will be handed out and announced in class.  All reading assignments will be checked for the use of directed notes.
Assessments:  Each unit will end with an exam.
Projects:  Design projects will be both hands-on and theoretical, on paper, utilizing Autocad drafting, or online design tools.
Grading:  1/3 Homework, 1/3 Exams, 1/3 Project contribution and team-related participation.

Class expectations:  You are expected to come to class prepared to work with others, be trusted to follow safety guidelines, bring a calculator, keep a 3-ring binder with notebook, and keep an open mind.

Unit 1-4.  Electronics, Circuits, and Fundamentals of Electricity.  This unit will introduce the function and roll of electronic components, schematic diagrams, circuit block diagrams, and design parameters. Take notes, class design assignments will be given.  Concurrent reading handouts: Technology Teaming, Employment values, the roll of education and training, team structures and teaming skills, career choices, entrepreneurship.  This unit includes a hands-on design project involving circuit board layout and design, electronic component selection, and the design/test of a functional circuit.  Use directed notes. (6 weeks)

Unit 5.  Technology Fundamentals:  History, evolution of technology, social/cultural impacts, ethical use.  This unit marks the start of the class project, it will involv Unit 4.  Communication, Information, and Graphic Communication:  Use of current communication technology, drafting, managing information, fundamentals of radio and internet communication technology.  This unit covers ethics in the work place. (3 weeks)
e constructions design of an autonomous vehicle.  (3 week)

Unit 6.  Design process:  Design tools, concepts of design, the 10 steps of engineering design, other design processes (4 weeks)


Unit 7.  Energy and Power Fundamentals:  Measuring energy and power, managing energy, impacts of decisions concerning energy management , sources, conversion, renewable sources, power systems including fluid, mechanical, and electrical, robotics. (6 weeks)

Unit 8  Manufacturing:  Production process from market research through production improvements (4 weeks)

Unit 9.  Construction and Structural Engineering:  Construction fundamentals, planning, controlling construction, roads, bridges, dams, canals, tunnels, pipelines, construction in space (3 weeks)

Unit 10.  Composites engineering and design, manufacturing, applications, marketing, with manufacturing lab (2 weeks)

Unit 11.  Transportation:  Innovative cars, aerospace engineering, highway and rail design, water transportation, transportation safety, power and energy transportation, impacts and effects of transportation technology (2 weeks)

Unit 12.  Bioengineering:  What is biotechnology, Impacts and effects of bio-related technology development, common bio-related processes, medical diagnostic technology, disease prevention, environmental engineering, food production (2 weeks)
