Welcome to Cornish Elementary School

I've been having technical problems with the web site.  Hopefully new information will be posted frequently.

Winter
January has been a wonderful month for children.  During recess, children are seen doing many traditional Maine activities.  Huge snowbanks are dotted with children climbing and sliding. Many different snowmen and snowforts have been built. Activities of all kinds happen in the area that is kept plowed.  We have snow in abundance, enough, as you know to use all of our scheduled snow days.  March 15 and/or April 5 (both Saturdays) are listed on the District calendar as make up days if we need to lose additional days. I'll keep you updated.

We have been lucky enough to have many warm and sunny days that allow children outside recess time. However, we do live in Maine, and we've had some frigid weather. Most students dress appropriately with heavy coats, ski pants, and boots, but we have some that often leave scarves, mittens and hats at home.  School buses break down or slide off the road so children need to be dressed warmly all the time.

Our special friends from
Rosemary's Gift Shop in Cornish, ME and Central Maine Power Company, we have many warm and beautiful mittens, hats and scarves that children use for recess each day. All of us at Cornish Elementary thank them. If your child isn't bringing these things from home because they don't have them.  Please, let us know, and we'll send a set home.

Eat healthy, stay active and warm.

Students at Cornish Elementary focus on School Safety.  We practice fire drills and lock downs many times so that we know exactly what to do in an emergency.

Fundraisers
See these many ways you can help our School without adding to your budget.

Please don’t forget to continue saving General Mills' Box Tops for Education coupons
http://www.boxtops4education.com/index.aspx Campbell Soup Labels for Education http://www.labelsforeducation.com/default.aspx  ,Ink Jet Cartridges and used cell phones over the summer.  All of these things help us buy the many things that our school needs that are not provided in these days of tight budgets.

Know more about your child's reading level.
There are links to leveled book lists at student Guided Reading Levels which would help you pick new books for your child's summer reading on my second grade Portaportal. A Portaportal is a site that allows individual teachers to post many web addresses that match the things that are taught in class or that we think will be appropriate for our students.  I will continue to add new addresses as I find them.  You can access these sites by typing in www.portaportal.com and typing in “bcarpenter” in the Guest Access window.   Look for the  section "Book Leveling Sites". There are, also, Math, Literacy, Science and Social Studies, and other sites  listed.  If you find any other particularly good sites for children, please let me know. I always appreciate your feedback.
