Written Oral Language Skills E-H

Grade 2

E.  Students will demonstrate the ability to use the skills and strategies of the writing process. Students will be able to:

 

1.  Tell about experiences, both orally and in writing.

 

 a.  Express personal experiences through illustrating and writing.

 

b.  Respond to prompts.

 

c.  Write letters (such as friendly letters, thank you)

 

d.  Create a fictional story.

 

e.  Respond to experiences in journals using 4-5 sentences.

 

2.  Respond to stories orally and in writing.

 

a.Write a personal reaction with supporting statements/details.

 

b.  Write a reaction to a prompt with supporting statements/details.

 

 c.  Demonstrate in written form, a knowledge of story structure (i.e., characters, problem/solution)

 

3.  Respond to remarks or statements orally and in writing. 

 

a.  Give personal opinions/ideas orally and in writing 

 

F.  Students will write and speak correctly, using conventions of standard written and spoken English.  Students will be able to:

 

 1.  Edit their own written work, as evidenced by pieces that show and contain:

 

a.  Write using lower case letters unless they can state the rule for using a capital letter.(the majority of the time)

 

 b.  Use upper case letters (names, I, beginning of a sentence)

 

 c.  Exhibit initial understanding of comma (greetings, closing, letter, date, list).

 

d.  Show evidence of appropriate use of second grade spelling (Quick Word, charts, target word lists, word wall)

 

e.  Shows evidence of using appropriate end punctuation.

 

f.   Correctly spell grade K and grade 1 target words and 80% of grade 2.

 

g.  Show evidence of recognition of misspelled words in their own writing by labeling with an Òsp.Ó.

 

     

2. Use oral language appropriate to the level of formality required.

 

a.  Speak before small groups using appropriate volume, looking at the audience.

 

 b.  Demonstrate a simple introduction.

 

c.  Speak courteously.

 

d.  Demonstrate appropriate ways to ask for help.

 

G.  Students will use stylistic and rhetoric aspects of writing and speaking to explore ideas, to present a line of thought, to represent and reflect on human experience, and to communicate feelings, knowledge, and opinions.  Students will be able to:

 

 

 

1.  Dictate or write stories or essays which convey basic ideas.

 

 

 

a.  Convey a personal experience in written or oral form.

 

 b.  Begin to write journal entries,stories, friendly letters, thank you letters, literature responses, research reports, and poetry showing evidence of basic structure.

 

 2.  Dictate or write stories or essays which include:

 

 a.  Initial use of descriptive language to clarify, enhance and develop an idea.

 

b.  Stories that show an attempt to using a beginning (introduction), middle (body), and ending  (conclusion).

 

c.  A topic that is developed and carried throughout the piece.

 

H.  Students will work, write, and speak effectively when doing research in all content areas.  Students will be able to:

 

1. Develop a search strategy, which uses appropriate and available resources.

 

 

a.  Tell what they know and what they want to know (KWL)

 

b.  Uses appropriate nonfiction sources for information.

 

c.  Record and share information gathered.
