E.        Students will demonstrate the ability to use the skills and strategies of the writing process. Students will be able to:

 

1.         Tell about experiences and discoveries, both orally and in writing.

q      a.   Produce a journal entry consisting of a labeled illustration and a dictated sentence.

q      b.   Participate in-group sharing.

 

2.         Respond to stories orally and in writing.

q      a.  Tell favorite part.

q      b.  Illustrate favorite part.

 

3.         Respond to remarks or statements orally and in writing. 

q      a.  Answer questions and respond to comments appropriately during any sharing time.

q      b.  Explore the difference between questions and statements.

 

F.         Students will write and speak correctly, using conventions of standard written and spoken English.  Students will be able to:

 

1.         Edit their own written work for standard English spelling and usage, as evidenced by pieces that show and contain:

            *           complete sentences

            *           initial understanding of the use of pronouns and adjectives.

            *           evidence of correct spelling of frequently used words.

*           few significant errors in the capitalization of proper nouns and of the words that begin sentences.

*           few significant errors in the use of end stop punctuation (e.g., periods, question marks).

 

q      a.  Write their first name correctly, beginning with a capital letter.

q      b.  Write the word I, always capitalized.

q      c.  Print recognizable letters.

q      d.  Complete work using careful, colorful, detailed criteria.

q      e.  Writes key sounds of 2 or more words, left to right.

q      f.  Writes beginning sounds of 2 or more words left to right. 

 

2.         Use oral language appropriate to the level of formality required.

q      a.  Speak in complete sentences.

q      b.  Practice speaking with appropriate rate, volume, tone and expression.

q      c.  Participate in choral speaking and singing.

q      d.  Ask questions.

 

G.        Students will use stylistic and rhetoric aspects of writing and speaking to explore ideas, to present a line of thought, to represent and reflect on human experience, and to communicate feelings, knowledge, and opinions.  Students will be able to:

 

1.         Dictate or write stories or essays which convey basic ideas, have sequences that make sense, and show evidence of a beginning, middle, and ending.

q      a.  Dictate and write a simple sentence.

q      b.  Dictate or write a sentence that makes sense.

 

 

 

 

H.        Students will work, write, and speak effectively when doing research in all content areas.  Students will be able to:

 

1.         Develop a search strategy which uses appropriate and available resources.

q      a.  Participate in a group brainstorm.

q      b.  Develop ÒI wonderÉÓ  questions to ask when gathering information.

q      c.  Record and share information gathered - Dictate information, Illustrate information, present information to the group.
