A.             Students will use the skills and strategies of the reading process to comprehend interpret, evaluate, and appreciate what they have read.  Students will be able to:

 

1.              Formulate questions to be answered while reading.

 

q                   a.            Design a variety of questions based on reading material. 

q                   b.            Formulate a variety of questions using higher level thinking skills. (i.e. evaluation, synthesis, analysis).

q                   c.            Participate in class and small group reading discussions.

 

2.         Reflect on what has been discovered and learned while reading, and formulate additional questions.

 

q                   a.            Analyze,  synthesize material, and expand questioning techniques.

q                   b.            Formulate questions based on what was read.

 

3.         Use specific strategies (e.g. rereading, consultation) to clarify confusing parts of a text.

 

q                   a.            Use context clues to clarify text, using different strategies for different kinds of text.

q                   b.            Access prior knowledge.

q                   c.            Use strategies of skimming/scanning to clarify confusing parts of a text.

 

4.         Understand stories and expository texts from the perspective of the social and cultural context in which they were created.

 

q                   a.            Identify cultural bias through discussions.

q                   b.            Make connections between literature and different cultures

 

5.         Identify accurately the author’s purpose, the author’s point of view, and specific devices an author uses.

 

q                   a.            Identify accurately the author’s purpose.

6.         Summarize whole text by referring to important and representative passages.

 

q                   a.            Identify and paraphrase representative passages.
